Tip of the Week - K*I*S*S

K is for K*I*S*S!

K*I*S*S otherwise known as Keep It Simple Silly (silly used to be stupid, but the kids voted that silly is better, because no one should be called stupid!) is a great little “motto” to live by when doing practically anything.

Keeping things simple will help your viewer “read” your story without it being overly complicated. When it comes to telling your story with photos, you need to ALWAYS keep your FOCAL POINT in mind. There are many ways to simplify within your photos.

First, consider your background. Is it noisy or have very “loud” colors? Does it draw your attention away from your FOCAL POINT? A simple background can be accomplished by using different camera angles to eliminate the distractions from the background. Use a solid colored background that doesn’t detract focus from your subject. Use background ‘bokah’ (blurring of the BG).

Next you want to consider options you have after the photo is shot. Sometimes things “appear” in our photos later (they were always there we just missed them when we took the photo). Would it be better suited in black and white? Tinted? Spot-colored? Full color? Are there objects there that we need to remove? Should it be cropped?

Yep, this is a shorty, sweet and to the point! Keep things simple, because less complicated images usually (rules are sometimes meant to be broken, you just need to know when), have the greatest impact on the viewer.
