Tip of the Week - Convert a Photo to Black & White

In Photoshop Elements (Version 4.0 and up), the easiest way to convert to a black and white photo is to go up to your menu bar click on ENHANCE > CONVERT TO BLACK AND WHITE.

Take note of these radio buttons. By clicking them off or on, you will get different variations of black and white. Try them out because you might like one of these better then the default that the program chooses for you.

In Photoshop CS3, you go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>BLACK AND WHITE (ALT+SHIFT+CTRL).  Then fiddle with the sliders until you are happy with the results…. or IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>DESATURATE (SHIFT+CTRL+U).

Also, you could get a black and white effect by using an adjustment layer. If you decide to use an adjustment layer, pick the hue and saturation choice, then slide the saturation slider all of the way to the left.

Before:

After as Black and White using IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>BLACK AND WHITE (ALT+SHIFT+CTRL)
gar_wink_bw

After as Desaturated using IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>DESATURATE (SHIFT+CTRL+U)
gar_wink_bw

Both of these B&W’s were done using Photoshop CS3. I would love to see your B&W creations. Post them onto the Momshots Flickr Photo Pool.
