Tip of the Week - A is for Adjustment

So for our first Tip Of the Week for our A-Z, we will start with A for Adjustments. Adjustments can mean many things in the world of digitals, but the ADJUSTMENTS I am referring to areADJUSTMENT LAYERS.

ADJUSTMENT LAYERS are really important because they allow you to make great changes to your photos without wrecking havoc on your original. This is also why we NEVER EVER EVER FLATTEN our images in Photoshop. ALWAYS use the SAVE AS and save a JPG copy as well as the PSD (Photoshop file). You can use many adjustment layers and can do any number of things with adjustment layers.

In Photoshop Elements you can add an adjustment layer by simply clicking on the Ying Yang symbol (small black and white circle located in the layers pallet just below the blending mode options box), and then choose the type of adjustment layer you want to use. You can also access the adjustment layers in the layer menu under LAYER > NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER > (choose the type of layer you want to use)

In Photoshop CS (CS2-3) you have the same Ying Yang symbol in the layers pallet and can access the adjustment layers through the layer menu under LAYER > NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER > (choose the type of layer you want to use).

Experiment with the different layer types and see what you can come up with! We will address LAYER MASKS at a later date, and these will help you fine tune how you use your adjustment layers!
