Love the site! It also seems as though you are on the same journey as I...falling in love with photography because we want to capture our children...I just didn't realize how complicated it is (or how complicated I am making it!)

I LOVE the first photo, it has dimension to it (it doesn't "feel" flat). The shadows and light (CONTRAST) drew my attention straight to his face... and then my eyes wandered through the photo. This is where you will want to determine a "focal point" and then decide how much of the viewers' attention you want to go to the rest of the photo (strong contrast draws attention). Great photos and love watching you learn!... Keep it up!

I love the perspective you captured in the top photo. You also might want to play to the strengths of that lens and try some up close and personal shots.

I stumbled upon your site and wanted to say that it's great. I wanted to compliment you on your effort to document your learning. It closely matches my own personal journey.

I enjoy your second to last paragraph where you want to make a habit at looking at light. It's hard for me to look at anything visually interesting without mentally thinking through how I would photograph it.

I also enjoy looking at other peoples' photographs and try to pinpoint those that connect with me, and identify why they do. It usually boils down to two categories. Those pictures that were planned and have great technical merit (lighting, composition, etc.) and those that really invoke a strong emotion by capturing a moment that makes you think or tells a story.

You can open any magazine to see examples of planned photographs. I would suggest looking at some pulitzer prize winning photographs for examples of the latter (If you so a search, I have to warn you that some are emotionally intense)

Well I've rambled, but I wanted to compliment you on your journey and your photography. I agree with you on your thoughts on lighting, but I also think you've been able to capture the emotion and essence of your children as well.

Best regards....
