Playing in the Snow…
My sister in law and her family are here visiting for the week. We are having a great time. Our kids play together so well and we just love having them here. Her husband even made us some of his scruptios-didlyupmtious popcorn last night.
I guess if you are going to be gifted, making popcorn on the stovetop is a great gift to have! He has got mad popcorn making skillz. Yummm!!!
They live in Southern California and their children have never seen the snow. Well, let me rephrase that, they have never played in the snow. We don’t have any snow at our house but we went up into the mountains to find some.
After a beautiful drive we found a place where we could get out and let the kids play until they were frozen. Or really, until the adults were frozen. It was fun.
I got out my camera and snapped a ton of pictures. Unfortunatly I was pretty dissapointed with my results. Kind of frustrating but a learning experience none-the-less.
This first photo is a bit overexposed. There is a trend in photographers right now to blow out light colors. I am torn between liking the way this turned out and wanting it to be less overexposed. Either way, it’s a cute result of B. playing in and eating the snow. There’s the whole shadow thing going on too.
This next picture is pretty cute, but if you look really closely, it is slightly out of focus. I had a lot of photos that were not in focus and I wasn’t even using my manual focus lens. I am frustrated by that. I am going to try again today and try to get some more that are in focus.
I this this last one is the best in terms of proper exposure and depth of field. However, Composition needs to be improved here. I love the idea of the footprints in the snow and Mag in the distance, however it is too busy on the left of the photo. I think if just the tree were gone it would look much better.
Anyway, I wanted to share my results with you. I was pretty frustrated while I was looking through my photos. I really wanted to have some cute photos of our excursion but I didn’t really have many.
I am going to try again today. We are going to go to Salt Lake City today and I am going to try again. I am always trying again. Practice, practice, practice. I think that is what it takes.
Even though this was a frustrating shoot, I can look at my photos and deduct what I did wrong. Today I can practice those things, like proper exposure, composition, interesting angles and backgrounds. It is a learning experience. Good think it is so fun!

I have had shoots like yours where I thought things looked good and I was excited for some fun pictures, but I ended up with focus issues or exposure problems. Photography takes a LOT of practice. Some think that just having a nice camera means that you will take great pictures. I have had a nice camera for 5 years and trust me when I say it is a whole lot more me than my camera–whether it is mistakes or great images.
I think that sometimes snow needs to be overexposed a bit to look bright and white, but I think skin tones should be spot on exposure wise–no blown spots. About the focus issues–is your focus point set to the right spot? With my D70, I had a few times where my focus point got moved off of center without me noticing. It took me a few outings of out of focus pictures to figure out what the problem was.
I can’t wait for some good snow so we can play with some snow pictures.

I thought the pics turned out great! But I really don’t know anything about photography - that’s why I have you! I’m so jealous you guys are having such a fun time!!

Thanks for your comment Gayle! You’ve got some really good points. I absolutely need to just keep practice, practice, practicing!!! Good thought about the focus brackets too. I move the focus brackets a lot but I get frustrated (there’s that word again) because the D40x only has three right across the center but that’s just me being greedy!!!
Also I love point about the snow being overexposed and the skin tones being spot on. More homework!

I love all 3 of those shots. If you’re still unhappy with the first, there are actions you can get to darken them up a bit for you. (It’s the main way I do things like that in PS, I’m not talented enough to be able to touch it up myself) I can send you links if you need them.
